MANY PROFESSIONALS TAKE PART INCLUDING: JOURNALISTS, POLICE, DEFENSE FORCE OFFICERS, ENTREPRENEURS

MANGROVE CAY, Andros: Professionals spent the day with Mangrove Cay High School students exposing the students to the many careers available from engineer to journalist to masseuse. And even though the students were excited by the show put on my the Royal Bahamas Police Force K-9 Unit, many students solidified their plans for after high school.

The Diversity of the North Abaco constituency

After months of campaigning, The Progressive Liberal Party’s Renardo Curry won the North Abaco seat in parliament after he defeated The Free National Movement's Greg Gomez and Bahamas Constitution Party servant leader Ali McIntosh in an historic by-election.

Curry secured 2,367 of the 3,887 votes in the election.  Gomez got 1,513 votes and McIntosh got 7 votes. 

The North Abaco constituency is very diverse as it is wide.  I took a look at the diversity that is NORTH ABACO. 

Scouts of The Bahamas embrace The International Day of Peace

The United Nations devotes The International Day of Peace to strengthen the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.  The day also hopes to build sustainable peace throughout the world and promote sustainable development throughout the world to reduce conflict. The day is also set aside for introspection on how every can personally contribute to paving the road to a sustainable peaceful future. 

Scouts around the world took the day a step further and launched a social media campaign to get 10,000 scouts around the world say how they are going to make changes in their own corner of the world. 

Two Bahamas scouts--Queen's Scout and Asst. Leader of the 4th Bahamas troupe and Benjamin Moultrie-Grant--talked to ZNS about how they are embracing the day.

Towards the ideals of peace

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

Sustainable Peace...

This year, world leaders, together with civil society, local authorities and the private sector, met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to renew political commitment to long term sustainable development.

It is in the context of the Rio+20 Conference that “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future” is the theme chosen for this year's observance of the International day of Peace.

There can be no sustainable future without a sustainable peace. Sustainable peace must be built on sustainable development.

The root causes of many conflicts are directly related to or fuelled by valuable natural resources, such as diamonds, gold, oil, timber or water. Addressing the ownership, control and management of natural resources is crucial to maintaining security and restoring the economy in post-conflict countries.

Good natural resource management can play a central role in building sustainable peace in post-conflict societies.

The International Day of Peace offers people globally a shared date to think about how, individually, they can contribute to ensuring that natural resources are managed in a sustainable manner, thus reducing  potential for disputes, and paving the road to a sustainable future, the "Future We Want".

TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR THE REMAINING
ISLANDS OF THE BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.

HIGHER GUSTS. STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS
AND ISAAC IS EXPECTED TO BE AT OR NEAR HURRICANE STRENGTH WHEN IT
REACHES THE FLORIDA KEYS.

TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 205 MILES FROM
THE CENTER.

LOCALIZED FLOODING CAN BE EXPECTED IN ALL OF THE ISLANDS IN THE
WARNING AREAS, AS RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 3 TO 5 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE
OVER THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN BAHAMAS.

UNLESS THERE IS A CHANGE IN MOTION, RESIDENTS IN THE CENTRAL
BAHAMAS SHOULD BE EXPERIENCING TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS
UNTIL LATE SUNDAY MORNING. RESIDENTS IN THE ISLAND OF ANDROS
SHOULD HAVE COMPLETED PREPARATION FOR THE PASSAGE OF TROPICAL
STORM ISAAC AS TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS WILL PERSIST UNTIL LATE
AFTERNOON SUNDAY. ELSEWHERE, RESIDENTS SHOULD CONTINUE TO

The Queen's College Comets came within 48 points of knocking off The St. Augustine's College Big Red Machine as the BAISS track and field champions.   The St. Augustine's College Big Red Machine wons the school's 24th straight BAISS track and field championship on Friday at the Thomas A. Robinson Track & Field Stadium.  SAC won with 1,307.5 points and Queens College finished in second place with 1,259.5 points. St. Anne's took 3rd with 468 points.
